"I'm already down as waffling on that one. I've waffled before. I'll waffle again...."

Gov. Dean to the Associated Press, 9/28/03

HOT OFF THE GRIDDLE: UPDATED NOVEMBER 18, 10:30PM

Dr. Dean speaks on the recent Waffle House controversy.Governor Howard Dean has positioned himself as the "straight-shooting" candidate in the'04 Democratic Presidential race. While we don't really have a preference (yet), it's pretty clear from watching the debates and reading about the candidates that Dean is just a typical politician -- adjusting his positions to find something politically popular.

We find it particularly abhorrent that Dean has essentially made his political fortune in the issue of opposing the Iraq war, while he supported it as recently as last October, while the famed vote in Congress was happening. As committed progressives, the only thing we can stand less than a Republican is a "finger to the wind", flip-flopping Democrat.

Have a taste of Dr. Dean's waffles for yourself.

HOT OFF THE GRIDDLE:
Nuclear Waste

When Howard Dean was governor of Vermont, he urged his senator to support the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain because "I wanted to get that stuff out of my state."

-As printed in the Las Vegas Review Journal, 10/29/03

But, he told about 200 supporters Tuesday night at a fund-raiser in Las Vegas, "now that I'm running for president, I've seen the light."

Dean stopped short of saying he was against burying the nation's nuclear waste 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, vowing, as numerous politicians including President Bush have before him, to "review the science."

-As printed in The Las Vegas Review Journal, 10/29/03

YESTERDAY'S SPECIAL:
The Confederate Flag

"But here are also a very significant number of folks in this state to whom it [the confederate flag] is a symbol of oppression and slavery."

-Gov. Dean to The Post and Courier (Charleston, S.C.), 1/26/03

"I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks,"

-Gov. Dean to the Des Moines Register, 11/1/03

Being a Voting Member of Congress

"I'm the only major candidate running, who's in reasonably good shape in the polls, who voted “No” on the Iraq Resolution."

-Gov. Dean in a speech to the America's Future Campaign, 6/23/03

Former Governor Dean is, in fact, not a Member of Congress -- either of the House of Representatives or the Senate. Thus, he has (and had) no vote on the Iraq resolution.

At the time of the vote, he actually supported the war (see below.)

Attacking Fellow Democrats

Headline: "Dean Rips Kerry as 'Bush Lite'"

-The Boston Herald, 9/18/03

"Nobody up here deserves to be compared to Newt Gingrich. . . . We need to remember that the enemy here is George Bush, not each other."

-Gov. Dean as quoted by the Associated Press in the 9/25/03 Democratic Debate, 9/26/03

Medicare

"I think it's one of the worst federal programs ever..."

-Gov. Dean in the San Francisco Chronicle, 8/17/93

"[Medicare is] one of the worst things that ever happened… a bureaucratic disaster..."

-Gov. Dean to the AP, 8/3/93

"...[I]n my campaign for the presidency, I will make the health of all Americans my first priority."

-Gov. Dean on DeanForAmerica.com Healthcare Plan.

Raising Taxes

Dean originally supported repealing the entire Bush tax cut.

"That’s why it’s so ridiculous to say we’ll keep the middle-class tax cuts...There were no middle-class tax cuts."

-Gov Dean, as quoted in the AP, 9/18/03

"At a campaign stop, Dean made his now familiar call for repealing President Bush’s tax cuts - but with the unfamiliar qualifier "some."

Answering a question about foreign aid, Dean said he would continue it, "but I do plan to get rid of some of the tax cuts to (former Enron Corp. chief) Ken Lay and the boys."

-AP, 9/19/03

North Korea

"I concur with most of the president's [Bush] policy on North Korea...."

-Gov Dean on Face the Nation, 1/6/03

"North Korea has become the biggest threat to peace in East Asia in half a century...U.S. policy has been incoherent, inconsistent and dangerously disengaged."

-Dean for America Policy paper at Deantv.org.

Terrorism

"We have to stop terrorism before peace negotiations"

-The Forward, 11/22/02

Dean, speaking about the Middle East, said he didn't "believe stopping the terror has to be a prerequisite for talking."

-CNN, 9/10/03

Iraq

""It's conceivable we would have to act unilaterally [in Iraq]...."

-Des Moines Register, 10/02

"I believe that Iraq does have chemical and biological weapons...."

-PBS, 2/25/03

"What I want to know is why the Democratic Party leadership is supporting the president's unilateral war against Iraq?"

-AP, 3/2/03

Campaign Finance
Dean said he has already raised the $100,000 from a sampling of states needed to qualify for the public money. The former Vermont governor promised to make it an issue in the Democratic primaries if any of his rivals decide to skip public financing.

``I think most Democrats believe in campaign finance reform,'' he said."
-Gov. Dean to the AP, 3/7/03

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean backed away from his pledge to adhere to spending limits, saying some advisors want to explore opting out of the Watergate-era public financing system because of his sudden fundraising success.
-AP, 8/16/03
Death Penalty

"I don't support the death penalty for two reasons. One, you might have the wrong guy, and, two, the state is like a parent. Parents who smoke cigarettes can't really tell their children not to smoke and be taken seriously. If a state tells you not to murder people, a state shouldn't be in the business of taking people's lives."

-Gov. Dean in 1992

"As governor, I came to believe that the death penalty would be a just punishment for certain, especially heinous crimes, such as the murder of a child or the murder of a police officer. The events of Sept. 11 convinced me that terrorists also deserve the ultimate punishment."

-Gov. Dean statement, 6/03

Social Security

""The way to balance the budget, Dean said, is for Congress to cut Social Security, move the retirement age to 70, cut defense, Medicare and veterans pensions, while the states cut almost everything else."

-Gov. Dean in Newshouse, 3/3/95

"I also would entertain taking the retirement age to 68."

-Gov. Dean to NBC's Meet the Press, 6/03

"I have never favored Social Security retirement at the age of 70, nor do I favor one of 68."

-Gov. Dean in the 8/5/03 Democratic Presidential Debate

Cuba

''If you would have asked me six months ago, I would have said we should begin to ease the embargo in return for human-rights concessions..."

-Gov. Dean to the Miami Herald, 8/26/03

"...But you can't do it now...."

-Gov. Dean to the Miami Herald, 8/26/03

Trade

Dean supported NAFTA.

-Time Magazine, 9/11/03

"Free trade is good...."

-Gov. Dean to On The Issues 2000

Opposes NAFTA and other free trade pacts.

"We ought not to be in the business of having free and open borders with countries that don't have the same environmental, labor and human rights standards."

-Gov. Dean in the 9/3/03 Democratic Presidential Debate

Environment

"I believe that there are few things we in public office can leave to our children and their children that are more important than the spectacular wilderness, clean waters, and beautiful forests that we now enjoy. As governor of Vermont, I took action to protect our environment and preserve our land. "

-Gov. Dean on deanforamerica.com

"EP under Governor Dean meant Expedite Permits, not Environmental Protection."

-Annette Smith, Director of Vermonters for a Clean Environment

"Howard Dean's environmental record in Vermont is toxic."

-Tom Elliott, fmr. Political Director of Vermont Sierra Club
